Kolguev Island


Kolguev (in translation from language "the Norwegian visitors" are meant with "triangle" or "triangular") - island in a southeast part of the sea Barentsev, in 75 km from continent. Is a part of Nenets autonomous region.  The area of 3200 km. A surface strongly hilly height of 70-80 m, a southern part of island - flat plain. It is a lot of lakes and bogs. Coast are cut poorly up, on the North-East are steep and high  It is combined by sandy-argillaceous adjournment. Vegetation tundra. From mammals tundra foxes live.  In the summer many birds (mainly natatorial) nest. Reindeer breeding, fishery, hunting are developed.
In the south of island the settlement Bugrino where lives local population - nearby 450  nenets - (a local nationality) is located, in east part of island work about 200 oilmen from Murmansk. In the north of island the working beacon " Kolguevsky Severny " is located.
The island is behind Polar circle, a climate severe, a long-term frozen ground. Mid-annual temperature - a minus of 3,5 degrees.
From History:
Many immigrants have visited on island, but were kept only nenets.
  In 1767 businessman Kotkin has delivered on a sailing vessel on island some families. Whether their ground dwellings which in the north name "bugrana" have denominated new settlement - Bugrino? But the scurvy has killed everything Long nobody dared to lodge in such terrible place.  At last per 1790 other businessman Michael Kurengin has directed to Kolguev for a craft of a sea animal nenets with Kaninskiy coast.  Crude meat - usual meal at nenets - has helped them to win a scurvy. They have perfectly got accustomed on island.  In 50th years of XIX century on Kolguev was 38 nenets. In 50th years XX of a century the most part nenets from Nowaya Zemlya before nuclear tests evacuated to Kolguev. From Nowaya Zemlya to Kolguev deers have been overtaken also. Today Bugrino is ethnoecological park. There is an airport, shop, 2 reindeer-breeding brigades, administration of settlement, school, medical item, station for a face and cutting of deers.
